Back in them olden days, those pirate guys got to shore in their jolly boats. These were funtimes boats for when you had lots of fun things to bury in the sand on a sunny, beach-day. On the front of their jolly boats, they sometimes had these little mini-cannon type things, called swivel guns, which were fun for them to use to get the different things to bury. Here's Cap'n Garrik's
The people that had to give their stuff away to the pirates to bury on the beach (before lunch and frisbee) didn't like those little mini-cannons, but they did have a happy use, like when they were saluting, or signalling.
"Ahoy, first matey, prepare to signal! We be oaring left into Ye Olde Burger King Charles row-thru fer some of them yummy chicken fries and diet rum!"
